The Need

The vast majority of the Japanese people have never encountered Christ. Japan is the second most unreached people group in the world, with less than 1% of its population—about 122 million people—identifying as evangelical Christians. This means that every day, countless Japanese people are dying without the hope of the gospel, facing an eternity apart from Christ.

Despite being one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world, Japan faces a deep sense of spiritual emptiness and isolation. Its two dominant religions, Shintoism and Buddhism, fail to provide meaningful answers or hope for the existential struggles many Japanese people face. The pressures of modernization, relentless work expectations, and societal norms only amplify feelings of loneliness and disconnection. In fact, 11% of Japanese people report wishing they had never been born, and 85% of young people wonder why they even exist. These challenges have contributed to alarmingly high suicide rates and widespread depression. In response, the Japanese government has even recently appointed a “National Minister of Loneliness.” On the outside, Japan may appear prosperous and advanced, but beneath the surface, the nation is grappling with profound spiritual and emotional brokenness.

The Hope

In the face of this deep brokenness, the gospel offers a profound and transformative hope. The grace and forgiveness found in a personal relationship with a loving God is exactly what the Japanese people so desperately need.

In Malachi 1:11, God makes a powerful promise: “For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name will be great among the nations…” God's desire is clear—His name will be made known throughout the world, from east to west. And this includes Japan.

We believe that God has a unique plan for the Japanese people, and when He makes a promise, nothing in all of creation can stand in the way of its fulfillment. As Romans 8:38-39 assures us: “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

We believe God has chosen to set His love on all nations, including Japan. And there is nothing in the universe that can stop Him.

Please join us in prayer, trusting that God’s name will be glorified in Japan and that His gospel will bring lasting hope to its people.
